Are Men Stronger Leaders Than Women

Traditionally, organizations both large and small have depended on a solely male leadership team to guide them through the smooth and tempestuous stages of business. In modern days, with the rise of not only female workers, but all sorts of female executives, many studies have researched the influence that women have brought to the corporate world. The myth that men are stronger leaders than women came about because of the standards and customs of the previous generations. Since that time, the status quo has changed dramatically as both the male and female roles have shifted to allow either sex to prove themselves an effective leader.

As a female in the workplace, male dominant stereotypes have always bothered me. Through the research and study that went into this paper, I learned that I am a feminist; not in the extreme ‘women are better than men’ classification, but rather the very definition that the sexes are equal. I have learned that just as women can be great business leaders like men, men can also be just as talented at skills traditionally assigned to women.

Athletic Competition: Creating Self-Esteem or Self-Destruction

This paper analyzes both the positive and negative effects that athletic competition can produce. It evaluates the differences in psychological, physical and ethical traits that may be found in athletes due to their competitive nature. The coaching style, parental influence and peer pressure each competitor is subject to may also play a significant role in the manner in which said participant approaches his sport. Coaches that are aware of, know how to identify, and are not afraid to intervene when an athlete shows signs of destructive behavior are more likely to minimize the potentially dangerous mannerisms that can occur.

As a long time competitive gymnast and now part time coach, I have constantly heard the debate surrounding the effects of competition on young athletes. Because my experiences were such positive ones, I had a very biased opinion when I started research for my paper. My eyes were opened to the several possible reasons as to how competition can corrupt a child’s youth. While I still maintain that the benefits of athletic competition outweigh the potential disadvantages, I now know the warning signs to look for in my athletes and can intervene in a possibly damaging situation.

Davis Enterprises Values

Davis Enterprises, my future corporation, prides itself on being an ethical environment with principled interactions both internally and externally. Our culture focuses on originality, where new ideas are always welcome and being just okay is never enough. As such an organization, we stand behind five basic values: We act as a team, We push past mediocrity, We serve with principles, We welcome innovation, and We internalize optimism. As a whole, we combine wisdom and new ideas to create an excellent atmosphere for constant improvement.

In this assignment, we were challenged to consider and then arrange a business value statement for a fictional company we created. Initially the idea seemed enjoyable and perhaps even easy; however, after putting much thought into the ethics I wanted to represent my company, it was hard to narrow down my ideas. Through this thought provoking assignment, I was able to define not only simulated business values, but the values that describe myself and my personal principles.

Communication for Conflict Management

When attempting to manage conflict within a group, there are five styles of communication that can be utilized: collaborating, accommodating, compromising, avoiding, and competing. Each method of regulating conflict has specific qualities and best practices; there are appropriate and inappropriate instances associated with every communication style and that idea should be in mind during application of any technique as to produce efficiency in any given scenario.

In this assignment I learned that there is no right answer, no one size fits all solution, in regards to communicating during conflict. At first, this realization was disappointing to me; as an individual that prefers to avoid confrontation, I wanted to learn one resolution that would easily solve any disagreement. However, by understanding and bringing the five conflict management styles into my real world usage, I have experienced that each form has a time and place to be applied. I believe that as I encounter and handle more conflict occurrences, I will master each management style.

Cheer is a Sport

According to The New York Times, organized cheerleading began in 1898 at the University of Minnesota when a male medical student picked up a megaphone and helped cheer his football team to victory. In this day and age, however, cheerleading’s primary purpose is no longer supporting other sporting events from the sidelines, it has become and should be classified as its own sport. The increase in physical activity, risk of injury, development of its competitive nature, all-star teams that are not ever on the sidelines, governing bodies involved, and organizations, like ESPN, that have already made the classification official are just a few reasons this ‘hobby’ should be defined as a sport.

This assignment is actually a persuasive speech and taught me several aspects of speech presentation and how to utilize them effectively for the art of persuasion. By beginning my speech with an attention grabber that links three of our country’s presidents to cheerleading, I have already made sure my audience is paying attention. During the course of the speech, I mention and rebuttal the opposing viewpoint to solidify a two sided argument, and I finish with a strong call to action; “Competitive cheerleading is a sport and should be classified as such.” This knowledge is invaluable and has created a compelling persuader.
