Deception

In an interrogation situation, such as a police officer questioning a suspected perpetrator, the honesty of the person in question can be difficult to determine. Because of circumstances like these, many different concepts were created to aid in the deciphering of a potential liar’s behaviors. Two of the more popular philosophies, the Four-Factor Model and the Interpersonal Deception Theory, could both be helpful tools toward a questioning interrogation officer’s successful efforts.

In my efforts to become a convincing persuader, I realized that I must understand all aspects of persuasion. By learning about deception and influence, I came to understand that much like power, persuasion on its own, is neither good nor bad, but can be used to either extreme. This assignment taught me how to discover deception. By examining intentional or strategic attempts to appear honest and the unintentional behaviors that beyond a liar’s control, dishonesty can be observed.  Accidental signs of deceit are often found in a person’s physical appearance: eye twitching or blinking, shaky limbs, or pupil dilations are all indicators of lying.

Interview questions are the gateway into countless possibilities. Although one may be the most gifted at their trade, without successful interview skills, they generally will not receive the chance to prove their talents. Knowing personal strengths, weaknesses, long and short term goals, past accomplishments and preferred work environment aid an interviewer in placing the most suitable applicant.

Employment Interview: A Self-Reflection

I have always thought myself to be an above average interviewee. After completing this assignment and challenging myself to come up with standout answers to basic interview questions, I have successfully prepared myself for the future. As a chronic procrastinator, this assignment forced me to proactively ready myself for any sort of job interview. I will now have solid answers to reflect upon as I move forward in my career progress.

Martin and Nakayama (2014) define conflict as “involving a perceived or real incompatibility of goals, values, expectations, processes, or outcomes between two or more interdependent individuals or groups” (p. 231). Because the film Gran Torino has several significantly different cultures: age, race, social status, religion and values within the community, the probability of intercultural conflicts arising is high.  By analyzing the film’s extreme intercultural conflicts, one may be able to make real life comparisons and more fully comprehend the ideas behind differing cultures.

Gran Torino: An Intercultural Analysis

As I have grown older and experienced more of the world, I have realized that I lived a relatively shielded childhood. This course, and this film in particular, depicted cultural disagreements and misunderstandings that I have not yet experienced in my isolated world. Through analysis of these differences and the problems that arise with them, I have learned more about my own culture and how it varies from others. I have more of a desire to seek out and encounter contrasting ways of life to more fully understand and/or appreciate my own blessed lifestyle.

In past years, there was a certain stigma that came with meeting people online and even more so toward virtual dating. However, in the technological world we live in today, internet relationships are quickly on the rise. This vast number of individuals may have turned to the internet due to frustration with the bar scene, contact anxiety, or lack of time to meet people in the traditional sense. Either way, the rise of social networking websites has forever changed the atmosphere of intimate relationships through the lack of face-to-face interaction, public verses private issues, and the increase in relationships with a virtual beginning.

The Impact of Virtual Networking on Intimate Relationships

As an individual who has trouble finding quality dates, this topic intrigued me from the beginning. However, the application of research methods and cross referencing techniques is where I enhanced my knowledge during this particular assignment. Generally when I have researched a topic there have been two, maybe three, definitive viewpoints on the topic. In this one, there were countless opinions and very few were conclusively for or against the idea of virtual relationships. With assistance from my professor, I utilized databases with peer reviewed articles to begin my knowledge quest and then cross referenced selected topics with my textbook and even popular magazines to create a well-rounded collection of research.

In the 2012 film sensation, Pitch Perfect, two captains of a college singing group are searching for new recruits to join their ensemble. While a great singing voice and performance quality are the only actually necessary characteristics to be successful in the group, one of the leaders is in the pursuit of classically beautiful girls who fit her tradition of perfection. By using visual traits to select group members, assuming they will also possess the qualities of her past team, this leader is subconsciously exercising the idea of the implicit personality theory.

Pitch Perfect: Interpersonal Communication in Film Reflection

Throughout my studies, I have found film analyses to be one of the most effective methods in which I fully understand textbook theories. The implicit personality theory is similar to stereotyping but says that individuals will make assumptions about others based on one or more physical characteristic or personality trait. The textbook used examples such as ‘a jock is often seen as dumb’ or ‘a pretty girl is outgoing’. From these I could not separate stereotyping from the implicit personality theory. By seeing the theory in action in a film, not only did I understand the theory more fully, but more importantly, I found an effective method of personal learning.ow a little more about you.
